"Any idea when you're interviewing the band?" an inquiry reads. "I wanted to ask if I can become their fourth member."

However, there remains a single issue: The author likewise desires to be Haim's fourth member. What's more, we are far from alone. Multiple famous fans have publicly petitioned for the role.

The evidence suggests an irresistible appeal is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their path playing gigs at local delicatessens with their parents. Now they're repeated Grammy Award hopefuls.

Like all the best groups, they're a tight-knit trio. Their visuals repeatedly show them walking in harmony down the streets of Los Angeles. In concert, they jam with such boundless joy you inevitably think, "I want to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that fans told us and said, 'After your show, I got a drum kit'," states Alana, the most junior of the trio. "That's the ultimate compliment. It is a prize in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can encourage others to form a group."

"Therefore anyone gets an invitation to be the next part of the family."

Award Milestone

The band are speaking from their homes, where they're recovering after an extensive tour in support of their new album, I Quit.

They're right now celebrating the news it's been nominated for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the very first all-woman band ever in contention for the award.

"I tune into the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is called," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I imagining things'?"

The importance of the nomination resonates with the trio.

"We truly set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a huge step," adds Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the women that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Laughter

The record was born from a time of transition. All three sisters were single, and the music captures that odd transitional period where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to let go.

The themes detail endings and farewells. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've had. You can hear them determining in real life who they aspire to be.

"I love description, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a personal statement. You have to consciously practice blocking the criticism and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Refinement of Style

That developed resilience demanded a fresh approach – more raw and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the drum sound.

"The drum sound is such a specific thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our biography," laughs Alana. "Our motto is, our albums cannot begin until we find the right drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Humor

The band's openness inspired the album's marketing, where the sisters shared some of their dating horror stories.

Someone ended things with Este over a health consideration. Alana recalled a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," says Alana. "Thus to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's incredible."

A Confident Path

It's not difficult sense a shift in the band. Now, Haim are more assured of their place in the rock pantheon.

They're top-billed acts, with hit albums and an global audience.

However Haim will always be their number one focus.

"Me and my siblings have been making music since I was a young child," shares Alana. "It feels as if no other path that we were destined for. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still making music."
