The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Whenever a significant awards ceremony draws close, there’s always a demand for the addition of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and delight the hearts of enthusiasts with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, which is someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: We need a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it remains highly personal, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
  • A different innovative game missed out that year
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked that year
  • Only a few puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles globally and have been for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and engaging across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
