White House Reveals Government Employee Layoffs as Shutdown Nears Three-Week Mark

Administration officials disclosed the initiation of federal worker layoffs on the end of the week, making good on earlier warnings linked to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office wrote on social media that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the official procedure for terminating staff.

While the official provided no details on which agencies were affected, a treasury spokesperson stated that layoff warnings had been distributed within that agency. Furthermore, a DHS spokesperson indicated that layoffs would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a union representing federal workers confirmed that members at the Education Department would be affected by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives warned that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on services used by millions of Americans and pledged to challenge the actions in the legal system.

“It is disgraceful that the government has used the funding lapse as an pretext to illegally fire numerous employees who provide essential functions to communities nationwide,” stated Everett Kelley, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.

The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the news, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to vote for a Republican-backed legislation to reopen the government unless it contains provisions related to health policy. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until the following week, meaning the standoff is not expected to be resolved soon.

At a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, criticized opposition lawmakers for not supporting the Republican bill, which was approved in the House on a near party-line vote.

Federal workers’ final pay that 700,000 federal workers will see until opposition leaders decide to fulfill their duties and end the shutdown,” Johnson stated. “Starting next week, American service members, who often live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a full paycheck.”

Legal and Operational Constraints

Previously, labor groups filed for a court injunction to prevent the government from implementing any reductions in force during the funding gap. Moreover, a federal judge directed the government to provide specifics on layoff plans, impacted departments, and if any federal employees had been brought back to carry out staff reductions.

A report contended that a funding lapse limits the ability of the government to carry out firings, referencing guidance that admitted any permanent layoffs need to have been initiated before the shutdown began.

Consequences for Employees

These terminations took place on the very day that federal workers got only a partial paycheck covering the final days of the previous month but excluding the beginning of October, since appropriations expired at the start of the period.

A public service advocate, the head of the advocacy group, condemned the gridlock’s impact on federal employees.

“It is wrong to make government staff suffer because our elected officials in the legislature and the White House have failed to keep our federal operations open and operational,” the advocate stated. The air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not at fault for this government shutdown.”

A notable point is that lawmakers and top administration officials are still receiving salaries amid the shutdown.
